Insurers are ranked by popularity. How is that calculated?
It's not as complex as you might think, but it is certainly something that is not easy to tamper with. Unlike some ranking sites which simply track the number of visitors or have a voting system in place - we have access to a database that tracks the percentage of actual policies sold. That is the main equation in our popularity calculation program: (number of policies sold) ÷ (number of unique visitors) x 100 = (percentage conversion rate). Our definition of popularity, therefore, is an insurer that has impressed you enough with their website, offers, clarity and price to get you to buy a policy. Note: we are only given number data on sales and visitors! Your name, where you live, the type of car you drive etc. are never displayed to us. See our privacy policy for more details.
Why don't you compare prices?
There are enough insurance price comparison websites - the UK certainly does not need another one. Unlike other shopping comparison services, insurance comparing only compares the actual product prior to sale. Most other product comparison websites, such as Kelkoo or Froogle for items like electricals, show you the product, compare the prices, tell you how good a match it is to your search requirements AND list extra costs such as shipping PLUS reviews by people who have actually used the product/company.
With insurance, the cheapest quote may actually cost you the most in the long run. If you read a few of our review boards for "budget" insurers, you'll see that whilst people feel they got the best initial price -- they were slapped with fees of £35 or more just for changing details (e.g. car, address etc.) or charged £100+ for cancelling the policy early.
Can you assist me with a complaint against an insurer?
Whilst you are free to air your grievance on our review boards to assist others in their insurance company choices, we cannot assist you in pursuing a complaint against any company. There are official channels to go through such as the Financial Ombudsman Service or there are help pages on the DirectGov website.
How reliable are the reviews you show?
Obviously, we have no way of knowing whether the person submitting the review is the insurer themselves trying to boost their image, a competitor trying to damage another's image or a real-life person with a real-life situation to share. Fortunately, most in-sincere reviewers are not the greatest con-men and a "plant" review is often very, very easy to spot. It's best to try and gather the important points raised: call waiting times, foreign call centres, hidden fees or repetition of the same complaint by several people over a period of time. One person ranting in length about how they were told 24 hours and it took 25 can sound quite convincingly bad, but really, it isn't.
Why is my insurer not listed?
We need an agreement with an insurer which allows us tracking data. If we can't track whether a visitor buys an insurance policy or not then that insurer cannot be factored into our ranking algorithm.
Of course, we are happy to add an insurer to our review boards for people to comment on so get in touch with your insurer's name and we'll look in to adding them!
How often is the directory updated?
The insurance directory ranking pages are updated at the beginning of each month. The data for the previous time period is re-run and rankings adjusted accordingly.
The consumer review pages are updated almost daily. All comments submitted to the review boards must be moderated to stop spam but we try to review each submission within 24 hours.
Votes on our polls are updated the instant you vote.
The news articles are added as they come through from our news desk. However, our news search function may not show them in a search instantly as there is an indexing process. For instant news, you need to view our RSS feed.
Why can I only vote once from my computer? My wife wants to vote!
Sadly, our website cannot tell if it is a different person voting using the same computer. To avoid someone sitting there clicking the vote button all day to affect the results, (we don't know why anyone would do that, but we don't know why people train-spot either), we have put security measures in place so that even if you go away from our site and come back hours later you still will be unable to vote. You'll have to phone up a friend and ask them to vote on your behalf! Sorry, as always, a small few ruining it for the rest of us.
Are you an insurance broker?
No. We don't take personal details and we don't provide individual quotes on behalf of any insurer.
Some of the buttons/links on the website don't work.
There could be 2 reasons for this:
1. You have javascript disabled on your web browser. Many of our pages use javascript to help navigation. Check you browser to see if this is turned on.
2. You have your pop-up blocker software settings too high. None of our pages will pop up pages automatically, but many links open a pop up page containing the information you've requested, such as a voting box or help information, to avoid problems navigating back to the page you're own. You'll have to fiddle with your pop-up settings a bit.
