Car Insurance Groups

Car insurance groups are determined every month by a panel of representatives from across the insurance industry who determine which group every vehicle fits into based on a number of different factors. It assigns a group number between one and 50 to every model of vehicle. A group 1 vehicle would be in the lowest insurance group, group 50 the highest. The main categories used to calculate which group a vehicle sits into are outlined below:

Not all car insurance companies choose to use the groups set by the panel, with some opting to set their own groupings instead. What's certain is that the higher the group number of a vehicle, the higher the insurance premium is likely to be and so it's worth checking which group a vehicle fits into before purchasing it. There are plenty og sites that offer a look up service, but the best is located on the Parkers web site.
