Wedding Insurance Guide

With the average wedding costing between £15,000 and £20,000, it makes sense to protect yourself financially should anything go wrong on the big day! As with any major investment, insuring your wedding costs very little and will give you that peace of mind should the unexpected happen. Wedding insurance will cover the majority of problems that could arise on your wedding day such as cancellation or rearrangement of the wedding or reception due to accident, illness or bereavement within the main wedding party, cancellation or rearrangement due to supplier failure, damage to the wedding attire, loss of wedding rings or failure to receive or damage to the flowers and cake.

How much does wedding insurance cost?

Wedding insurance can cost as little as £20 for basic cover up to around £5,000, or up to £200 for fully comprehensive covering up to £65,000 worth of wedding expenses, so if you have any concerns about your wedding is is certainly worth covering yourself!

There are a few things that would not be covered, such as simply changing your mind or being unable to actually afford the wedding. It is worthwhile checking the policies before taking one out to check what is and isn't covered.

If you have paid for items costing between £100 and £30,000 with a credit card, you should be able to claim your money back from your credit card provider, using section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, and should apply even if you just paid the deposit using the card. According to consumer rights group Which?, this includes problems with goods or services that constitute a breach of contract – such as your reception venue being double-booked or the wedding cake not being delivered.

It is also worth checking with your home insurance provider as there may be some provision for weddings in the policy, or at least allow you to extend your cover for a wedding. If so, check what is covered to see if it is a cheaper option than buying a seperate policy.
