Overview: Sun Life is a company which has been offering insurance services since 1810 and was the first company to offer life assurance to people without them requiring a medical. This was in 1900. During the second world war the entire head office was evacuated and two London branches were lost.
The first over 50's life cover plan was introduced in 1979 by Sun Life Direct and in the ensuing 30 years the company has built up a reputation for delivering great solutions for those at the older end of the market.
Since 1826 the Sun logo has been used by the company. Originally the trademark would be displayed outside of a property to show that it was insured against fire. The firemark would identify which insurance company the owner of the home had a policy with. They were used for two hundred years and phased out at the beginning of the 20th century.
Nowadays the company focuses on the over fifties market where they offer a range of comprehensive plans and are a market leader. Now known as AXA Sun Life Direct, the company has more than 750,000 customers and 130 members of staff. The head office of Sun Life is now split between London and Bristol
The three main option which they offer are:
Guaranteed over 50's plan: For those aged between 50 and 85; this plan has fixed monthly premiums and can help policyholders to leave a fixed cash sum for their loved ones. The cover does not require a medical and continues for life.
Funeral Plan and Funeral Assist: For those aged between 50 and 80. Perfect for planning a funeral and taking care of the expenses in advance. This cover is provided in conjunction with AXA Wealth Services Ltd and the Co-Operative Funeralcare. The policy will pay out as long as two years of premiums have been paid.
50 Plus Protector Plan: For those aged from 50 to 75. Provided by AXA Wealth Ltd trading as Sun Life Direct; this plan offers a growing cash sum and the premiums increase by 5% each year. Essentially the longer the policy is held, the more money is paid out on death.
AXA Sun Life Direct claim that 94% of their customers are either satisfied or totally satisfied with the service they received from them, while 90% would be happy to recommend them to a friend.
All the over 50s plans are hosted at www.sunlifedirect.co.uk (formerly at www.over50plan.co.uk) -- please take note that www.sunlife.com is a completely different insurance company as is www.sunlife.co.uk so make sure you're on the right site before entering details. Also, whilst www.axasunlife.co.uk works fine (though you'll need to work your way around) www.axasunlife.com is not owned by the company as are probably a few other variations so keep yourself aware who you are giving your details to.
AXA Sun Life Direct Public Comments Board:*
Remember, the majority of people that look for places to leave comments, do so because they've had a bad experience and want to vent. We suggest you pay attention for common threads in reviews rather than simply weighing up the percentage of bad ones! ;)

02/05/2011 I just wanted to give a quick review of Lets Cover Landlord Insurance which is part of the Axa insurance group. I've recently cancelled my policy with Lets Cover landlord insurance because of the appalling service. I made a claim for a wall which collapsed and after months of their terrible service I have had to make a complaint to the ombudsman. Every time I rang lets cover there was a different excuse for why they were not willing to honour the claim - each time I gave details which refuted their excuse they came up with another. Finally, their call service didn't even seem able to access the claim and seemed confused as to what was going on.
15/02/2011 my father was with sun life for over 20 yrs and paid £40 a month at least till he died 3 weeks ago. His wife received £1500 on his death nowhere near what he paid in its disgusting it didnt cover the funeral cost much to her distress
04/01/2010 I have recently discovered that my Mother took out an over 50s policy when she was 80. She is now 92 and has paid in over £900 - the value of the policy is just £400! If she stops paying in the payout will behalf that and if she surrenders it early she will get even less than that. Axa are refusing to be flexible by freezing the plan, thus ensuring my Mother does not throw any more money away on this. They said it was unfortuante that I was not monitoring her mail at the time she took it out and that she didn't have the foresight to take out the plan earlier!
