Name: Flexicover Insurance
Quote Rating:
5.0 out of 5
No. of Reviews: 15
Overview: Flexicover Direct focuses on one type of insurance only, which is travel cover. As a result, it has a wide range of polices with different cover options. Policies include the usual single trip and multi-trip annual cover, gap year insurance for students, winter sports cover and long stay policies for extended breaks of varying lengths.
Flexicover Direct is a division of Citybond Holdings plc, which has been trading since 1984. This company operates various other travel insurance businesses, including TopDog Insurance (www.topdoginsurance.co.uk) and Citybond Suretravel, which are both based at the same Beckenham address. Citybond Suretravel also arranges and manages ABTA's ABTASure travel insurance scheme for the benefit of ABTA members. The scheme aims to provide high quality travel cover, underwritten by AXA Insurance, which ABTA members can offer to UK holidaymakers at competitive premiums. The scheme also includes Scheduled Airline Failure Insurance that is provided by International Passenger Protection Ltd.
Another division is Healthscreen247 / Healthcheck247, which is a provider of travel insurance. It also runs a medical screening service where policyholders of the various businesses that the company operates can declare medical conditions and have them accepted.
Flexicover reckons it is one of the leading direct sales travel insurance providers in the UK and claims to have more than 1.5 million customers. It provides cover for over 300 listed existing medical conditions and includes a range of activities (over 100 of them), different age groups and provides tailored polices for varying travel needs. Anyone using a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is guaranteed not to have to pay any excess when making a claim.
Flexicover's main focuses are its varied policies, cover for existing medical conditions and emphasis on older policyholders. Travelsupermarket recommended it as one of the providers to choose for those aged over 65 while separate figures showed it was the cheapest in providing travel cover to a 70 year old female.
An article in The Guardian in 2007 complained that claiming for a travel cancellation due to the illness of an aunt was denied due to only 'close relatives' qualifying. However, both the British Insurance Brokers' Association and the Association of British Insurers confirmed that most policies would exclude aunts from claims. Nearly all policies will only allow the insurer's spouse or partner, fiancˇe, parents, children, siblings and grandparents to be included when making claims. Flexicover Direct is considered to be better than most because it does at least allow close in-laws to be included.
The website address is www.flexicover.co.uk, although www.flexicover.net and www.flexicover.com both redirect you there. However, don't get confused with www.flexitravel.co.uk, which redirects to a flight booking site, or www.flextravel.com that offers holidays and related services. With this company's parent offering so many services across different brands it could lead you to believe they have a wider range, but not everything with "flex" in it comes under this particular umbrella.
The parent company ran in to problems of its own when Citibank challenged the use of the name Citybond in 2005. This eventually failed due to the variations in spelling of 'Citi' and 'City' as well as the differences between 'bank' and 'bond'.

05/05/2010 Flexicover Direct have let us down, we were stranded in Brunei for 6 nights because of the volcanic ash cloud... Guess what we are not covered... Wouldn't use again!!!
29/04/2010 Flexicover direct were of no help whatsoever when I was stranded in Singapore/Malaysia for 6 days after the volcano erupted. They wont even pay delay charges. I no longer have confidence in them.
24/04/2010 Flexicover may be competitive but their service is poor when you come to claim. Om it was due to the volcanic ash our holiday was cancelled but we got a short sharp NO! wouldn't renew with them if they were the last company on earth!
