Overview: Gocompare.com is one of the better known comparison sites and provides prices for all sorts of products and services, including credit cards, mobile phones and utility suppliers. However, probably its most used and publicised feature is its insurance comparison service.
The Newport-based company is an independent business that is managed by its staff. It was launched in November 2006 as an online car insurance comparison service and has expanded since then to include other products and services. It is the only price comparison site with BIBA accreditation, having been invited to join the British Insurance Brokers Association in May 2008.
The comparison service was started by chief executive Hayley Parsons, who has form in the business having been the co-founder of Confused.com. Gocompare.com was named 'One to Watch' in the 2008 Fast Growth Business Awards and gained the Investors in People award the following year. Founder Hayley Parsons won the Woman in Business Award in the 2009 Chamber of Commerce Business Awards and won the Welsh Woman in Innovation Award for 2008.
One of the claims the company makes is that it doesn't just focus on price as others do. Instead, it also lists product features and benefits, with a five star rating system. It reckons to provide comparisons from over 150 of the UK's leading insurance companies. The site guarantees that any special deals and discounts available from insurance companies are passed on to customers and included in the prices that are shown.
A Moneysupermarket.com advert was banned in early 2011 after Gocompare.com put in a complaint. The advert's claim that Moneysupermarket compared more home insurers than anyone else was found to be based on insufficient data and the basis of the claim was not properly explained.
Gocompare.com launched a series of TV advertisements featuring opera singer 'Gio Compario'. In reality, this was Welsh singer Wynne Evans, who was reportedly paid £450,000 for a series of ten advertisements on condition that he did not spoil his image by losing weight. The TV commercials were apparently intended to be 'deliberately annoying' and seemed to succeed in this aim after being voted the most irritating advert of 2009 and then repeating the feat in 2010.
Whatever people think, the series of adverts is considered a huge success by the company since they have certainly raised awareness of the brand. They've also been a great success for Wynne Evans, who was a jobbing tenor before they started and is now a wealthy man with a six-album deal with Warner Records. The downside is that his wife, who teaches violin in local schools, denies being married to 'Gio Compario' to avoid distractions.
The site hasn't always had unqualified success, with it reported as being hit by Google penalties in January 2008 for flouting webmaster guidelines, allegedly due to paid links and reviews. This resulted in it dropping way down the Google lists when searching for 'Gocompare' or 'car insurance' and, according to Hitwise figures, resulted in an 87% traffic drop.

02/05/2011 I dislike the adverts thus not being a hypocrite I have never used their service. Why should I after that bollox. The compare the meerkat campaign run by a competitor on the other hand is pure genius.
04/11/2009 "Do you or does anyone you know work from the home the dog is kept at?" - what kind of question is that? And then on and on with the marketing gathering ... my email address, my phone number, my mother's maiden name, where did I hear about GoComper, my date of brith, how long have I lived in the UK ... all just to get a single dog insurance quote!! I was about to close the browser but decided to just give fake email/phone/dob etc. as I don't want someone ringing me up from India every day for the next month like what happened with the last form I filled in -- got some nice quotes in the end.
