Overview: After years of selling postage stamps, issuing licences and paying out pensions and other benefits, the Post Office has branched out into providing additional products and services that are likely to make the queues even longer. In some ways, it is an attempt to offset falling business, with emails replacing letters, companies able to print postage labels from their PCs and pension amounts paid directly into bank accounts.
Post Offices will now sell you stationery, lottery tickets, mobile phone top-ups, foreign currency and provide a banking service among other things. They will also sell you a whole range of insurance, which you can buy at the counter, over the phone or online through their website. Given the rate at which Post Office branches have been closing recently, it's probably as well the website is available. Of course, like most businesses that have diversified in this way, the Post Office doesn't provide the service itself but works with the Budget Group of companies and uses a range of insurers for the different products.
Car and home insurance from the Post Office are arranged and administered by BISL while travel insurance is underwritten by Ageas Insurance. Term and mortgage life cover policies, as well as an over 50s plan, were launched in 2007. From 2008 to 2010, the Post Office won the 'Best Life Insurance Provider' award at the Your Money Direct awards, which are run by Your Money magazine. The firm's pet cover, which is provided and underwritten by AXA, won the 'Best Pet Insurance Provider' award at the Your Money Direct awards in 2009.
A study by Post Office Insurance in late 2010 revealed that 40% of travellers were concerned about the possible failure of their tour company when travelling abroad. One third were additionally worried about disruption caused by strike action. Around 80% of travel policies do not provide cover for airline failure, emphasising the need to study the small print before buying cover.
Having upset most mortgage brokers by launching a range of 90% loan to value deals that were provided directly to customers, the Post Office then tried to repair the damage in mid 2010. Specialist business insurance was launched that was tailored specifically for the UK's 40,000 mortgage brokers. This provides cover that includes damage to premises due to theft or arson, theft of keys and loss or theft of data storage or computer equipment. At the time, the Post Office made comments about the important role of mortgage brokers, although this may not be enough to overcome the anger aroused previously.
There seems to be some confusion over the location of the PostOffices websites with many typing in strange variations, some even with .gov and .gov.uk endings into our search facility. To clarify, the address you should bookmark is www.postoffice.co.uk (www.thepostoffice.co.uk redirects there also) with www.postoffice.com and www.thepostoffice.com both being owned by different companies
Post Office Public Comments Board:*
Remember, the majority of people that look for places to leave comments, do so because they've had a bad experience and want to vent. We suggest you pay attention for common threads in reviews rather than simply weighing up the percentage of bad ones! ;)

12/09/2011 This £25.00 cashback is a big con. When I received my new car insurance reminder, I realised that a year had already gone by and I had not received my cashback. I rang Post Office insurance and reminded them about my last year's cashback. I was told that their supervisor will send me a check by the return of post. I have now been waiting for over a week and nothing has happened yet. I rang and reminded them again. Now I am told that it usually takes about 10 days. I wonder how many 10 days have gone by since last September. Does it means that you will never receive any cashback if you do forget about it.
22/09/2010 Had a car accident back in April 2010. My insurance was with PO, who passed on the details to Minster Law for legal help and 17 months down the line I get the same repetitive message saying that the third party insurers are waiting for a police report... I understand Police are understaffed, but .... 17 months?!
