Overview: Saga has become a one stop stop for all things related to insurance for those over 50 years of age. They have built an enviable reputation and are the company which is often thought of first when insurance services for the elderly are being considered.
The company was pioneered by Sidney De Haan who realised that older people needed a company they could trust and which was dependable and reliable. He began by organising excursions and holidays for retired people in the 1950's and started The Saga Club in 1966. Members received the Saga News, which has now been replaced by the Saga Magazine.
Saga Services, the financial arm of the company, was started in the 1980's and insurance was offered as it was realised that older people had trouble getting insurance from the current providers. The range of products available has been extended over the last 18 years. It wasn't until 2004 that Saga Insurance Company Limited was established allowing the company to underwrite car, caravan and motorhome insurance.
Not only does Saga offer advice and information on insurance, they also have a magazine for their customers and can offer advice on health and other issues to do with advancing age. In addition to all of this, Saga also gives advice on and sells finance products and even holidays and travel.
The company prides itself on giving a service which is tailored to those aged over fifty. Their website is available in different sized fonts for those who have poor eyesight and they offer all of their services over the telephone and not just online.
The types of insurance which Saga offer are varied and cover most areas of the sector. The main ones include the following:
Car insurance: Saga say they take into account the fact that older drivers have more experience and that this is reflected in the premium offered.
Home insurance: With a choice of cover level for contents and buildings insurances.
Travel insurance: As this is often difficult to get as people age, Saga offer cover for most pre-existing conditions and a confidential medical screening process.
Private medical insurance: With twenty years experience offering health insurance.
You do not have to buy Saga car insurance from the website because there is also a phone number for your convenience - though even my 80-year-old gran is web savvy these days. However additional introductory discounts are available when you buy online at www.saga.co.uk (www.saga.com is a completely different company).
Saga Public Comments Board:*
Remember, the majority of people that look for places to leave comments, do so because they've had a bad experience and want to vent. We suggest you pay attention for common threads in reviews rather than simply weighing up the percentage of bad ones! ;)

06/09/2011 Today i rang saga to tell them my farther had past away and i am a named driver on his policy we now pay £415. To put the policy in my name with 40% discount at 55 years of age and no claims the quote came to £3731 but thay dont know why ......well goodby
02/06/2011 I had to make a rather minor theft claim (of belongings from car) and was not really impressed with the result. I felt I was being treated as a fraud. Had to prove proof of ownership of every item, and in the end received less than half of the value of my claim. No proactive contact from Saga...had to initiate contact on every occasion. As a result I have refused renewal on two car policies and am about to refuse renewal on home insurance. How much was my claim? Less than £500!!
14/01/2011 I have recently been trying to speak to someone at Saga with regard to renewal of my car insurance and home insurance. It took 6 days to get through to someone on an 0800 and then I was told I had to phone another number. Held in a queue for 20 minutes and not answered. I received the renewal information which their letter was dated 17/12/10 on 11/1/11. The people I spoke to were very rude and had a couldn't care less attitude. This is suppose to be a company that deals with the over 50's, well I think they have some very cheap labour being employed and not a customer caring organisation.
