Overview: Back in the 1950's just one insurance company saw the advantage of using the new medium of television to advertise its product. That company was Swinton and ever since, the company has continued to use technology to its advantage.
Swinton is a UK insurance brokerage and is owned by a French company, MMA insurance Plc. They currently have 600 branches across the UK and 3,000 employees. They have call centres in Manchester, Halifax and Norwich and handle more than 2.5 million policies each year. Due to their size, Swinton claim to have superior buying power and highly trained staff, ensuring their customers get the best deals in the marketplace.
Swinton is named after the home borough of the man who started it in 1957. Ken Scowcroft began the business by selling car insurance from his home and in the first year he sold just 100 policies to his neighbours. The Scowcroft family grew the business until it was eventually bought by Sun Alliance and then MMA.
Since it changed hands Swinton insurance has grown into a major player in the industry and continues to acquire new businesses. Some of these include Colonnade Insurance Brokers, Budget Retail, Vectis Insurance Services and Rockford Insurance Brokers.
Swinton is probably best known for their car insurance products due to their close links with the major car insurance companies. As well as this they also offer home insurance, travel insurance, business insurance, life and pet insurance through their network of highly regarded insurance companies.
Swinton has moved into online insurance services with great ease. They now offer more than just the ability to buy different insurances, they also compare the best available quotes helping the customer to make the best choices for them. Not only do they have relationships with the main UK insurers, they also have access to specialist insurers for the likes of classic cars and motorbikes.
In 2008 Swinton was named as the Broker of the Year for their customer service capabilities and for the way in which they integrated their many high street branches with their online experience.
In 2007 they merged with its4me in a move planned to improve its online business and web presence with their own website located at www.swinton.co.uk (www.swintoninsurance.co.uk redirects to the main site but www.swinton.com is not owned by them so keep an eye on where you are).

17/04/2011 Went back to them after having company car for 15 years, as it was a name I felt comfortable and familiar with - what a shock. Underhanded, disingenuous, unprofessional, more interested in squeezing money than providing customer service.
24/09/2010 Tell me about it i have had to sell my bike and they have just charged me £50 to cancel a policy that only cost me £70 in the first place and i am 5 months into the policy at that they have most definately lost a customer in the future that is day light robbery you should be ashamed of yourselves
22/09/2010 I missed a payment with swinton car insurance due to lack of funds in my bank £140,they have now cancelled my policy ok fine!. I have now been sent a bill for £1250 for the whole year is this legal?
