The AA Car Insurance

The AA Car, Home, Van, Bike & Breakdown Insurance:
Name: The AA Insurance
Quote Rating: 4.5 out of 5

No. of Reviews: 20

Overview: Given that the AA has been coming to the rescue of Britain's broken down motorists for many years, it is perhaps not surprising that it also provides other motoring related services. Chief among these is car insurance but it also has various other types of cover as well, with home insurance, travel cover, pet insurance, life policies and business cover also available. In early 2011, the company launched life cover for the over 50s, provide by Friends Provident.

Unlike many of the companies that have jumped on the insurance bandwagon, the AA does actually seem to handle most of the insurance itself through Automobile Association Insurance Services Limited. However, home insurance is provided through a panel of 'leading insurers' while minibus insurance comes from selected providers and the home emergency response is underwritten by Acromas Insurance Company Limited. The AA does operate a dedicated claim line for its car insurance.

You will get a better deal if you're an AA member, with reduced costs for home emergency response and some higher cover limits for car insurance. If you pay with your AA credit card, you'll earn AA Reward Points that you can redeem against AA products or 'treats'.

The AA's travel insurance operation suffered adverse publicity during the disruption caused by the volcanic ash cloud in April 2010. Having initially promised to cover its customers' additional travel and accommodation expenses, it then found its underwriters would not pay out. As a result, it withdrew the offer and instead asked travellers to claim through their airline.

An AA market analysis, published in early 2011, showed that a fifth of people surveyed would not be taking a holiday during the year. Most others were planning to cut back, with around a fifth of travellers not buying travel insurance due to the cost. For a company that sells travel insurance, this is a worrying trend and it warned of the dangers of going without cover.

The AA's British Insurance Premium Index showed that car insurance premiums had risen by one third during 2010, with young drivers being hardest hit with a 58.3% annual increase. This was largely put down to losses in the previous year when £123 was paid out in claims for every £100 taken in premiums. Fraudulent claims are often blamed, with claimants exaggerating injuries and 'cash for crash' accident scams being common. There are also an estimated one million uninsured motorists in the UK.

The rises have prompted a House of Commons enquiry. However, the AA expects further increases in 2011 after the biggest annual rise since its index started in 1994.

Just some browsing notes - www.aa.co.uk does not work as you cannot have a two letter .co.uk website address. The www.aa.com website is for an american airline company but both www.theaa.com and www.theaa.co.uk get you to where you want to be. www.aainsurance.co.uk works too but not www.aainsurance.com - as always, bookmarking is best if you plan on returning later.

The AA Public Comments Board:*

Remember, the majority of people that look for places to leave comments, do so because they've had a bad experience and want to vent. We suggest you pay attention for common threads in reviews rather than simply weighing up the percentage of bad ones! ;)

06/01/2010 I took out aa car insurance, but when renewal was up i decided to go elsewhere, problem was i needed proof of my no claims bonus for my new insurer. It took months for me to get the document through from AA, many many calls to them, they kept saying they had sent it out but would do so again, but nothing arrived on my doorstep, my new insurers had no option to threaten me with cancelling my policy! so much stress and anxiety, it all made me ill, it was an absolute nightmare, for such a big company i thought they would be the best, but they turned out to be the worst.

16/12/2009 Just a note have just tried to renew my insurance with break down cover but was told that this could not be done I would have to call another number - not sure why attitude of the customer service person was not at all friendly or helpful no wonder people become cheesed of with the bad attitude - the quote for my car insurance is so very high plus road side cover it would take it to more than £500 this seems over the top to me. Will have have to find a new provider

18/11/2009 Exactly same problem with the AA..... and I was in hospital for my 14 days cooling off period! Not a dot of sympathy from customer services! Disgusted with their attitude!

19/10/2009 It is not the law for insurance companies to post a renewal document to you. This is not compulsory with the FSA (financial services authority). Technically you should know when your insurance is due to renew. I know when mine is. (I am not insured by the AA)
